Back when cars were a lot more bulbous than sleek, the cream of the Detroit crop was the GM Cadillac, the ultimate post-war status symbol. Designed for the upwardly-mobile set, the Caddy—especially the DeVille—was a symbol of classiness, elegance, and opulence. It’s little wonder why “Mad Men” producers cited the DeVille as the car of choice for the show’s protagonist Don Draper. Meanwhile, movers and shakers on the other side of the law a la “Donnie Brasco” also cruised between racket jobs in a DeVille. And while there’s little argument that the Caddy had its best days in the ’50s and ’60s, a recent eBay barn find demonstrates how time hasn’t been very kind to the once high-lauded model.
DeVille’s Grill Is Missing
Back in the day, the Cadillac not only reflected class, but it also served notice that the driver meant business. A squarish grille symbolized a warning to anyone who got in the way, while the tail fins resembling the protrusions on a B-movie rocket ship, served notice that America was going to grab the Space Age by the horns and reach new heights in a future that seemed to be within grasp.
However, this retro specimen hardly looks like anything that would have intimidated middle-class sedans during its prime. If anything, the rusted body with the grille missing beneath the jutting hood more closely resembles the mechanical shark after meeting its fake with an exploding scuba tank in Jaws.
Caddy’s Engine, Body And Interior Need Work
That said, the Madison, Wisconsin owner claims that the convertible—which has been in storage for 40 years—is in much better shape than what optics would otherwise dictate. The top frame, says the posting, is complete, while some welding has taken care of some open floor patches, although the trunk will need work. And while the interior is in shambles, all the windows are apparently intact as are the dash gauges.
No doubt the car will need some work, not the least of which will be a total engine rebuild and replacement of rockers and rear wheels, a job that was already underway before this DeVille went up on eBay. But at least the owner is willing to supply the DeVille’s rear tail lights and cones, plus a rear seat from another hardtop free of charge.
